Outpost in the Burbs
This unique organization began in 1987, when a group of community-minded people opened a coffee house to bring in others into their group. Outpost operates in the First Congregational Church in Montclair, which holds 750 people and is both beautiful and has beautiful acoustics. Outpost has produced more than 500 concerts by folk artists known around the world, including Judy Collins, Roger McGuinn, Richie Havens, Dar Williams, Loudan Wainright, Rufus Wainright, Joan Osborne, the Jayhawks and so many others.
Outpost is an organization dedicated to community service. In addition to producing amazing concerts, they partner with service organizations as a key part of their mission, including Habitat for Humanity, Community Foodback of New Jersey, Soup Kitchen Workdays, and the Human Needs Pantry.
The Wellmont Theater
Situated in the heart of downtown Montclair, this 2600 seat theater opened in 1922, first for live entertainment and then for movies. With major renovations and refurbishments done in 2008 and 2013, the Wellmont is now a destination venue for people around New York and New Jersey. It’s an intimate space that hosts big-name acts. Major artists and performers have included Melissa Etheridge, David Blaine, Gavin Degraw, Wycleff Jean, Todd Rundgren, Denis Miller, Chris Tucker, Rick Springfield, Ziggy Marly, the Wallflowers, among so many others. IPA beers and food are served.
rumpets Jazz Club & Restaurant
Opened in 1985, this nightclub prides itself on being “the best jazz club in New Jersey.” Great performers have included Gato Barbieri, Wynton Marsalis, and Dave Valentin to name a few.
